When you live or vacation in Fripp Island, there’s no shortage of unique and thrilling experiences for you to add to (and check off of) your bucket list. From premier golfing and fishing, to delectable restaurants and water activities, there’s something for everyone in this small island paradise!
One of our favorite, must-see attractions for anybody visiting or moving to the area for the first time, is the momentous Hunting Island Lighthouse. If you’ve never heard of this historic landmark, don’t worry—we’ll cover everything you need to know before your stay!
The original lighthouse, constructed in 1859, was actually destroyed.
The original Hunting Island Lighthouse was demolished by the Confederates during the Civil War, to prevent the Union Army from using it as a navigation tool.
It was rebuilt and reopened in 1875 using cast iron plates, which would allow it to be disassembled and relocated if necessary. This came in handy when, in 1889, the lighthouse needed to be moved further inland due to beach erosion!
Some people believe the lighthouse is haunted.
What’s a lighthouse without a good ghost story, right? Several different tales have been perpetuated over the years about the Hunting Island Lighthouse. One legend goes that the ghost of a lighthouse keeper who tried and failed to save a drowning boy continues to pace the beach, searching for him in the waves.
Another tells the story of a different keeper’s daughter, who jumped from the top of the structure and died. Some visitors claim to this day that they can hear the moaning of a young girl in the staircase. If you ask your tour guide, they just might spin you a tale that’s even more haunting.
The Hunting Island Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in South Carolina accessible to the public.
The lighthouse is open for climbing from 10am-4:45pm (3:45pm during the off-season) daily. Inside, you will find 167 steps that lead up to an observation deck that gives you a dazzling view of the seascape and the island—one of the most memorable sights you will ever see! Admission costs just $2 per person.
